Before you pour gold and materials into a weapon, check whether its numbers can actually reach the target. That matters most for builds chasing a reliable double-damage or double-cast effect, where every missed percentage point shows up in real fights. A promising piece from your stash of D4 items may look close enough at first glance, but "close" is not the same as a guaranteed 100%. The base roll, the upgrade path, and where the major Masterworking boosts land all decide whether the item is worth keeping.

    Start with the upgrade math

Masterworking runs through twelve ranks. Regular ranks raise the item's affixes by five percent, while ranks four, eight, and twelve give one chosen affix a much larger twenty-five percent increase. Those three moments are the whole story for a double-damage stat. If the boosts land elsewhere, the result can be disappointing. If they all land on the right line, you might hit the cap. Use this quick order before committing resources.

    1. Read the affix's base percentage.

    2. Check its possible roll range.

    3. Map the three major boosts onto that affix.

    4. Compare the finished value with 100%.

Test the item before you upgrade it

A planner is useful because it removes the guesswork. Enter the weapon's actual affixes, set Masterworking to rank twelve, then place the large boosts where you want them. You'll see the likely finished stat straight away. Say the relevant roll can appear between 47% and 65%. A 55% roll feels solid when it drops, especially if the rest of the weapon is good. Yet with the intended boosts, it can still finish around 96%. That is a rough place to be: you've invested heavily, but the build still has a gap in its core damage pattern.

Find the floor, not just the ceiling

The smarter move is to work backwards. Set up the ideal upgrade outcome in the planner, then lower the starting percentage one point at a time. Once the projected result slips under 100%, you have found the cutoff. In this example, 59% out of 65% may be the lowest starting roll that reaches the cap with the required Masterworking results. That gives you a clean rule when sorting drops. A 58% version may still be usable, sure, but it cannot become the same finished item under that plan.

    Spend where the result matters

This approach also stops you from pushing past the cap for no return. Extra double-damage chance above 100% does nothing, so those valuable boosts may be better aimed at attack speed, critical strike damage, or maximum life. When comparing Diablo 4 Items, keep a simple threshold in mind instead of trusting a high-looking roll. It makes loot decisions quicker, saves materials, and leaves your character with upgrades that actually improve the build.
